Upper Dolpo Trek

Dolpo, one of the rural place in mid-western Nepal is positioned in between the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri mountain Range. The region was closed to outsiders and visitors until the year of 1989. However, some naturalist and anthropologist have discovered some of its parts.

It is the biggest district in Nepal and occupies the area of 7,889 Sq. Km which is 5.36 percent of the total land mass. The name Dolpo is derived from the Tibetan word and the small town of “Dunai” is headquarter of Dolpo. The place was identified as the Land beyond the Himalayas till late era as the place was undiscovered like Upper Mustang.

The remote trek in Nepal, Upper Dolpo Trek is only explored by few trekkers and possess a variety of specialties and characteristics. In the year of 1984, one and only biggest Trans-Himalayan national park, in the name of “Shey Phoksundo National Park” was opened. The park covers the area of 3500 to 4000 square kilometer. The act has preserved flora and fauna along with different spices of wildlife. Musk Deer, Blue Sheep, Snow Leopard, Mountain Goat, Himalayan black bear are some of the examples of animals protected under this act. Similarly, the Rhododendron, Juniper, Salix, bushy shrubs are some of the important plants of the region.

The isolated village of Dolpo has only a few number of inhabitants counting in an average of 16000. The people follow Buddhism, Bon, and Tibetan culture, however, there is religious harmony among the people. Most of the people regard Nepali as their main language and followed by the Tibetan Language. These people here are friendly, innocent and bizarre from people living in urban area. These resident are also the highest dwellers in the World. The region is well depicted in the Nepal’s first English subtitled movie on Dolpo ‘THE CARAVAN’ (Oscar-nominated movie).

Upper Dolpo Trek Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

Heartily welcome to you in Nepal. Our company Personnel will pick you up from Tribhuvan International Airport you will be transferred to three-star category hotel in a privately owned car. Hotel Check-in, resting time, freshen up time will be provided and you have to get ready for the meeting in the company office. The meeting includes the brief explanation of the activities, do and don’ts, and details description of the itinerary. Also, you will receive your permits to enter Upper Dolpo (Shey Phoksudo National Park). After the completion of the meeting you will be taken for welcome dinner accompanied with Nepali music, dance and cuisines in best typical Nepali restaurant with Nepali Themes. 

Day 02: Explore Kathmandu Valley and Trekking preparation (1,300m/4,264ft)

The sightseeing features some of the main landmarks and UNESCO world heritage sites of Kathmandu valley including Pashupatinath Temple, Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa. This trip will freshen up your mind and will provide the opportunity to come across the culture and tradition of Nepal. Similarly, you will also experience the ancient royal lifestyle. You will come to see the rituals, belief, and lifestyle of people around the Kathmandu valley. After the trip, all of you are requested to gather in our office for the remaining trek preparation like finalizing your clothing and training to handle the trekking gear if necessary.

Day 03: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj Flight

The scenic flight duration will be one and half hour. After you arrive in Nepalgunj our guide will transfer you to a hotel and after some break, you will be taken for Nepalgunj city tour.

Day 04: Nepalgunj to Jhupal flight (45 minutes) and Trek to Dunai, 2 to 3 hours (2,850m/9,348ft)

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the airport for another flight to Jhupal. Discovering the amazing view of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna mountain range you will reach the Jhupal airport in about 45 minutes. Your trekking guide will catch you at the airport and after the short walk (2 to 3 hours) you will reach the Village of 'Dunai' (Headquarter of Dolpa District). Explore the city during evening and Night stay in 'Dunai'.

Day 05: Hike to Ankhe, 5 to 6 hours

The route will be diverted from The King Mahendra Statue and intersect at Suspension Bridge we will head to West, continuing to the way leaving the hospital. The trail passes the barren valley called Thulo Bheri. After that crossing the watershed hike towards Phoksundo river valley. After some hours of ascends and descends of foothills will take you to the place called 'Dhera' which is also a winter inhabitant of people living in Rahagaon. These people come to 'Dhera' with their livestock as the temperature will be too cold and snowy. The path leads from Rahagaon will encounter Canyons, Phoksundo Khola, and dense dark forests to reach the village of Ankhe. This village is the main entrance or entry point to the Phoksundo National Park.

Day 06: Trek from Ankhe to Sulighat, 5 to 6 hours, (3,500m/11,480ft)

The trail will take you towards the grassy slope leaving behind the forest and numerous riverbeds. During the course of ups and down you will meet several natural springs and streams where you can chill yourself. Again after few hour of climbing reaching around 2950m, you will find the Rocky Mountains edging the river. The villagers and caravan passing through the trail will provide a struggling and peculiar view of mountain lifestyles. The trail continues upward till you meet the bridge close to Ryajik Village. Overnight camp in Ryajik.

Day 07: Trek to Phoksundo Lake, 4 to 5 hours

The trek will lead to the junction of Phoksundo and Pungmo River. Intersecting the wooden bridge, the trail continues to the west side of Pungmo River taking us to Phoksundo Lake. The Lake is situated in the village of Ringmo Village. The hike will take us to the winter settlement zone of Ringmo dwellings describing the picturesque view of cedar and palam forest. The trail continues high hills and reaches to 3,350m overlooking a magnificent view of Phoksundo Lake, its surrounding forests and the backdrop of the snowcapped mountain. Also, the trail walks down to the bank of Lake for night stay.

Day 08: Rest Day

The rest day will feature the short hike to nearby settlements and monasteries and then fully relax and get acclimatized.

Day 09: Trek to Phoksundo Khola, 4 to 5 hours

After encompassing the Lake we now head to the west bank in order to reach the Phoksundo Khola. On the way, we will cross numerous difficult trails, valley, and ridges. After the hours of Ups and downs, we will be able to reach the spot for overnight camping.

Day 10: Trek from Phoksundo Khola to Phoksundo Bhanjyang, 6 to 7 hours

After the few hours ascends of glacial valley heading north you will meet the junction of Phoksundo River and one more mountain stream. Heading northeast from the wooden bridge you have to scrabble or crawl quickly across the rocks and erratic and climb down to the sheer valley. This difficult trail will lead you to the best scenic place on earth called Kang-La-Pass which is also the highest point of our trek. Overnight camp near Pass facing Shey Gompa.

Day 11: Trek from Kang-La-Pass to Shey Ghompa, 5 to 6 hours, (5,360m/17,581ft)

After the early morning breakfast, we now head to climb steep ridge of Kang-La-Pass to reach Shey Ghompa. Overlooking the mesmerizing view from the highest point your journey hikes down to steep valley passing through the river banks, bushy shrubs, and the Rocky Mountains. You even will get a chance to see the view of grazing livestock like yak, mule, and horse on your way down. After walking around 5 to 6 hours you will reach Shey Gompa. Overnight in Gompa.

Day 12: Rest day

You will be graced with one more day to embrace the beauty of Shey Gompa. The day will be passed short hiking around Shey Gompa and will get a chance to discover more about the Gompa. According to the locals, Shey means Crystal hence people also called this monastery as Crystal Monastery. The place is the inhabitants of numerous monks and Lama. It is the biggest monastery in the region considered have been built many centuries ago. Some of the believers of Bon faith regards this monastery older than the Buddhism itself. The monastery is situated above the junction in between Kangjunala and Yeju Nala Khola. There is a tradition of Shey festival in the region and for which thousands of pilgrims and devotee even from another village will gather to this Monastery. One who treks during the festival season will get a chance to indulgence in local culture and customs.

Day 13:  Trek from Shey Monastery to Namduna Village through Saldang La, 6 to 7 hours

The trek will commence through the trail surrounded by Juniper trees climbing down via stony gorge. And then the twisty trail featuring naked rocks will take you to the Saldang La (5200m), and then succeed north, overlooking cattle grazing pastures we approach Namduna Village. You will come across the red stone Gompa with white background is the idol of Namduna Gaon as Shey Monastery. This hamlet consists of few stone roofs and depends mainly on agriculture, animal rearing, and trading. Only one crop a year is grown predominantly, Barley. Also, the surrounding village also crops potato, buckwheat or radish.

Day 14: Trek from Namduna Gaon to Saldang, 4 to 5 hours

Leaving behind Namduna Village we ascend our steps towards the sloppy trail. On climbing barren gorge and mountains for around 3 hours you will reach the Place called Saldang situated at 3,620m. The place keeps itself below the Plateau and above Nam Khongmala. This village is regarded as the biggest village in Dolpo region. The village of Saldang is extended until 2 kilometers in Trans Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau. The reason behind this huge settlement is because the place is en route to Tibet for trade. Overnight in Saldang.

Day 15: Trek from Saldang to Yangze Gompa, 4 to 5 hours

The trek is said to have been unreachable and undiscovered by any foreign trekkers. The trail is more strange and difficult and passes through Nang Chu River. The barren path with lead to the village of Tiling and Luri village reaching our destination as Yangze Gompa. On the way, you will leave two landmarks one is Panzang River and another is Bon-Po Monastery.

Day 16: Trek from Yanze to Sibu, 6 to 7 hours walk

There are two options to follow from Yanze either take a long path from the village of Nishalgaon or choose back path from Saldang. Our guide will recommend you with the shorter walk (the second option) retracing our way until Saldang and intersecting through Stupa, mani stones, and monastery we will reach the Namdo Village. It is a large village situated on the bank of Nam Khond Khola. From here, we will drop down almost for 2 hours to reach our destination. Overnight Camping in Sibu.

Day 17: Trek From Sinu to Jeng-La-Phedi, 5 to 6 hours

The trail follows the bank of the river till you will meet the caravan passing to Tibet border. After walking few hours you will come to the junction of two river stream, from where you hike towards the steep trail till you reach the end of Jeng La situating at 4900m. Night Stay at Jeng-La Phedi.

Day 18: Trek from Jeng-La-Phedi to Tokyu through Jeng La

The trek begins ascends for two hours to Jeng La viewing the amazing scenario which again drops down towards Tarap Valley. By the noon we will reach the Valley directing to Tarap Chu. Tarap is one of the plain valleys of the region. The place composed of ten localities, artistic gompas, and agricultural Land. Overnight in Tokyu Monastery.

Day 19: Trek from Tokyu to Dho Tarap, 4 to 5 hours

The treks follow east towards the downhill edge of Tarap Chu. The valley is different from the rest of the valley in inner Dolpo with abundant shrubs and bushes. Geologist called it a miracle of Tibetan Plateau and Ladakh Mountain range. The two ethnic of this place Bon Po and Chaiba Sect stay here in peace. After walking few hours you will reach a mystic village of Dho Tarap. Dominants of this place are Tibetans and Magars. Night Stay in a tea house.

Day 20: Rest Day

The day will be spent on rest and acclimatization. We will hike around nearby villages and localities and explore some Gompas and local markets. You can explore the lifestyle and attire of highest dwellers of the world. The short walk of 40 minutes from the camp area will keep you active throughout the day.

Day 21: Trek from Dho Tarap to Tarap Khola (Kamakharka), 6 to 7 hours

The day starts walking down from barren Tarap to the Valley via narrow gorge. We will pass by Juniper forest penetrating the dried Himalayan Valley. On the way, you will meet across the caravans. The trail will take you until the junction of Tarap Chu and Lang Khola. We will set a camp side nearby caves. Overnight in Kamakharka.

Day 22: Trek from Kamakharka to Khanigaon, 4 hours

The trail descends to the gorge and continues further towards Tarap River. On the way, you will probably meet the native people who are on their way to lowland pastures along with their livestock. In some places, the valley became so small that we can jump from one gorge to another. On our way, we will meet numerous camping site. Overcoming the adventure and thrills we will pave our paths towards Khanigoan. The best part of our trip is that somewhere in some stream and glaciers the wooden bridge is not present or damaged so we are compelled to cross the ice cold glacier with barefoot.

Day 23: Trek from Khanigaon to Tarakot, 4 to 5 hours

The trail ascends and drops down to the village named Lalberi. In the course, we will come across the beautiful forest and shady gorge and follow the river bank we will walk further to Tarakot. It is an urban settlement and the Junction of Tarap Chu and Barbung Khola basically famous for Fort. Before Gorkha invaded Dolpo it was the capital of Dzong. The village is situated in small hill towards the south of Bheri Khola. Either you can make your campsite in the bank of the river or walk steep hills to reach a tiny village just opposite to Tarakot.

Day 24: Trek from Tarakot to Dunai, 5 to 6 hours

Walking across the side of Bheri River leaving behind the gorge, pine forests, and the coniferous forest will take you to the city of Dunai. As this is the biggest market in the area you can enjoy the ice cold beers or local brew just to quench your thirst.

Day 25: Trek from Dunai to Jhupal, 2 to 3 hours

The day will begin after the lavish breakfast in the lodge and will continue short walk to the airport. Hang around the Jhupal and overnight.

Day 26: Fly from Jhupal to Nepalgunj and Nepalgunj to Kathmandu

The day we will have an early morning flight from Jhupal to Nepalgunj overlooking the trail that you succeeded. The mesmerizing mountains like Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range will add more excitement to the trip. The Same day we will take a subsequent flight from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu. .If in the case the unavailability of the flight we will transfer you to the hotel in Nepalgunj and take a next morning flight. If you got the same day flight then you will be transferred to the hotel in Kathmandu and after some freshen up you will be taken for the lavish traditional Nepali themed dinner.

Day 27: Leisure day

The day you can have a rest after a long journey to Upper Dolpo or you can spend your time exploring Kathmandu and its periphery. Similarly, during the evening you can roam around the traditional Nepali markets for gifts and souvenir.

Day 28: Departure Day / Farewell Day
