Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

Kanchenjunga with the height of 8,586m above from sea level is the third highest mountain in the world. The name Kanchenjunga is derived from the Tibetan word which means “Five big Jewel of snow”. The mountain lies 125 km east from Mount Everest which borders Nepal, Tibet, and India. The peak is first ascended by the British explorer and climber Joe Brown and George Band in the year of 1955.

Kanchenjunga Circuit trek is out of ordinary trek in eastern Nepal. The charismatic beauty of snowcapped mountain range featuring lustrous hills, reddish rhododendron forests, ice cold glaciers, and watershed will provide the unforgettable pleasure of the traveling. The Circuit Trek is in its phase of popularity in recent years. Numerous tea house and lodges en route have been increasing year after year. The region was inaugurated for trekking in the year of 1988 and it applies numerous terms and conditions. Until today, only Northern and Southern edge is permitted to be passed through. The region is now protected as the Conservation area and spread across 2035 sq. km. The area features numerous wildlife including Musk, Red Panda, and endangered Snow Leopard. Recently the conservation project started to protect birds like pheasant and red-billed blue magpie. The trek will pass through some of the major attractions of eastern Nepal like Taplejung, Illam, Suketar, Pathivara temple etc. starting from tropical lowlands to high pass and Tundra.

After the flight of 45 minutes to Biratnagar and the 3 to 4 hours of drive overlooking the scenario and highway, you will reach the amazing tea garden called Kanyam which will erect the view of Kanchenjunga. This place is also ideal for the mysterious view of Sunrise and Sunset. Appreciating the precious beauty of neighboring peaks (Kanchenjunga West as Yalung Kang, Kambachen, Jannu, Jongsong, Kabru) and rivers (Tamor, Tista) the trek will go ahead.  The trail continues high hills and climbs until you reach Kanchenjunga Base Camp.

Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel

Our company representatives will pick you up from Tribhuvan International Airport you will be transferred to three-star category hotel in a private car. Hotel Check-in, resting time, freshen up time will be provided and you have to get ready for the meeting in the company office. The meeting includes the brief explanation of the activities, do and don’ts, and details description of the itinerary. Also, you will receive your permits to enter. After the completion of the meeting you will be taken for welcome dinner accompanied with Nepali music, dance and cuisines in best typical Nepali restaurant with Nepali Themes. 

Day 2: Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing and Tour and Trek Preparation (1,300m/4,264ft)

The sightseeing features some of the major landmarks and UNESCO world heritage sites of Kathmandu valley including Pashupatinath Temple, Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa. This trip will freshen up your mind and will provide the opportunity to come across the culture and tradition of Nepal. Similarly, you will also experience the ancient royal life style. You will come to see the rituals, belief, and lifestyle of people around the Kathmandu valley. After the trip, all of you are requested to gather in our office for the remaining trek preparation like finalizing your clothing and training to handle the trekking gear if necessary.

Day 03: Fly Kathmandu to Biratnagar (81m/266ft)

Today we will fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar (a town in eastern Nepal). If there is a subsequent flight to Suketar we will fly on the same day or else next morning. However, there is another option by road to drive until Phidim. Stay overnight inn Phidim.

Day 04: Fly to Suketar (2,420m/7,938ft) or Drive from Phidim to Suketar

If you stayed overnight in Biratnagar will have to take a flight to Suketar and those who took drive till Phidim will again drive to Suketar. Today you will stay at Suketar.

 Day 05: Trek Mitlung from Suketar, 4 to 5 hours (921m/3,021ft)

Today is the initial trek day with lots of enthusiasm where we will take you downhill hike until we reach Mitlung. The hike highlights the arable valleys, grazing fields and slopes keeping side the amazing Kanchenjunga sight. Overnight in Mitlung.

Day 06: Trek Mitlung to Chirwa, 5 to 6 hours, (1,270m/4,166ft)

The Sinwa village will be discovered after few hours of ups and downs. The trek heads downhill till Tawa and gaining some heights at Tawa we will cross the suspension bridge towards Thiwa. The trail to Chiwa (an ethnic Limbu Village) features broad varieties of landmass and a wide selection of diversity. We will pass that night in Chiwa socializing with the local community.

Day 07: Trek from Chiwa to Sukathum, 5 to 6 hours walk, (1,576m/5,169ft)

The dense forest and the agricultural field will lead to the village of Sukathum. As the trail again ascends and descends until you reach Tamor river where you have to cross the big forest. You will encounter Ghunsa River from where you have to move your feet towards Sukatham. Night Stay at Sukathum.

Day 08: Trek from Sukhathum to Amjilosa, 6 to 7 hours of walk, (2,308m/7,570ft)

The trek will be a little bit challenging today as we have to walk steep hills after crossing the suspension bridge. Also passing through the huge forest and few ups and down will take you till gorge and after climbing the gorge you will discover the village called Solima. We now head to Amjilosa after a short break and spend overnight.

Day 09: Trek to Gyabla, 6 to 7 hours of walk, (2,730m/8,954ft)

The trek starts after the breakfast in Amjilos and then we follow the river bank passing through the rhododendron and bamboo forest to reach Stone house near the riverside. We climb up to meet the bridge appreciating the beauty of waterfalls and springs. Again after one more upwards walk we will find our targets. Overnight in Tibetan village called Gyabla.

Day 10: Trek from Gyabla to Ghunsa, 5 to 6 hours (3,595m/11,792ft)

The trail walks down till the river discovering a valley which will lead us to place called Phale, a refugee village of Tibetan. On the way, you can even purchase the handmade crafts and souvenirs from the local community. After that penetrating the coniferous and alpine forest we will march towards the village called Ghunsa. The evening time can be utilized gazing over hydroelectricity plants and markets. Overnight in Ghunsa.

Day 11: Rest Day/ Acclimatization

The day will be utilized for acclimatization and covers only short hike to village and monastery in order to keep you active and energetic.

Day 12: Trek to Kambachen, 5 to 6 hours, (4,050m/13,284ft)

The trail continues north after our breakfast at Ghunsa following the river bank. The trail will be full of rhododendron, pine forests. We will meet a bridge near Ramuk Kharka and pass from to cross landslide area. As soon as we cross Ramuk Kharka we will click a view of Mt. Jannu. Following the same trail, we will enter the village of Kambachen for overnight.

Day 13: Rest Day

The day will be spent as acclimatization overlooking our team and their issue related to health and altitude sickness. Just relax your day and explore around the village. Night stay at Kambachen.

Day 14: Trek Kambachen to Lhonak, 6 to 7 hours (4,780m/15,678ft)

The day is more difficult comparing normal days as the trail has a rocky path with big bedrock. We have to trek uphill and down riverbank displaying waterfall on the side. We will come across the Ramtang Monastery (popular monastery in Kanchenjunga Region) from the bridge. After that, a careful cross over the landslide will open our way till Lhonak.

Day 15: Trek from Lhonak to Pangpema/Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, 6 to 7 hours, (5.388m/17,673ft)

The trial will take you to Kanchenjunga glacier and you have to stay overnight in Pangpema/Kanchenjunga You should be very cautious while climbing as the rockier area has the high chances of the landslide. Take short walk you will reach the grassy plain at base camp where you can savor the amazing looks of Kanchenjunga, Chang, and Jannu Mountain.

Day 16: Trek from Pangpema to Kambachen, 6 to 7 hours (4,050/13,284ft)

We will recall our trail till Lhonak and Ramtang Gompa. The journey back to Kambachen is easier because of its downhill nature. We will have a night stay in Kambachen.

Day 17: Trek from Kambachen to Ghunsa, 3-4 hours, (3,595m/11,792ft)

Enjoying the backdrop of mountain and natural scenery we will get continue the walk down until Ghunsa for overnight.

Day 18: Trek from Ghunsa to Sele Le, 6 to 7 hours (4,290m/14,071ft)

The trail will feature steep hills and the Rocky Mountains that reach to Sele-Le. Leaving behind the juniper and rhododendron forest we will climb uphill from Sele-Le. Breakfast and lunch will be served at specific places as the trail only has few teahouses. Night stay in Sele-Le.

Day 19: Trek from Sele-Le to Cheram, 6 to 7 hours (3,870m/12,694ft)

Gazing the beauty of Jannu Himal and Makalu we will march towards the uphills to enter Cheram. Today is the exciting day of our trek as we are crossing multiple passes like Mirgin La Pass, Sinion La Pass and Sinelapche Bhanjyang. Leaving behind the Pass we will climb down to Cheram.

Day 20: Hike from Cheram to Ramche and Back to Cheram, 4 to 5 hours, (4,580m/15,022ft)

We will climb near the edge of Yalung glacier and walk to Simbhuwa Khola. After that, we will cross Lapsang Village to enter Ramche. We further climb up and acquire the edge or top of moraine. From there you will discover the Southern face of Kanchenjunga. Walking ahead admiring Jannu Himal we will discover Oktang Monastery. Climb down and stay the night at Cheram.

Day 21: Trek from Cheram to Tortong, 5 to 6 hours walk, (2,995m/9,824ft)

While climbing down to Tortong we will meet two paths, one will recall our way down to Sele Le and other will take us to Simhuwa Khola. We will choose the new trail and enjoy rhododendron forest on our way to Tortong. Overnight in Tortong.

Day 22: Trek from Tortong to Yamphudin, 6 to 7 hours, (2,080m/6,822ft)

As we come down from Tortong to Yamphudin we will pass by the place called Lasiya Bhanjyang where we pull or trail via forests and Landslides. After few hours of a climb down we will reach the beautiful hamlet of Sherpa and Limbu community. Overnight in Yamphudin.

Day 23: Trek from Yamphudin to Yangpang, 6 to 7 hours, (1,007m/3,304ft)

Following the trail across Kabeli Khola we will drop down from Yamphudin to yangpang via Samekham. The path also features the Limbu Museum and the traditional culture. After that, we pass over Khaksewa Khola and climb up to cardamom forest discovering different villages. And then we climb down to Yangpang for overnight.

Day 24: Trek from Yangpang to Thorpu, 5 to 6 hours (1,500m/4,290ft)

The trail will lead us to place called Thorpu instead of Taplejung because we can save a lot of time and energy. Moreover, the decent view of the landscape from this route will attract maximum trekkers to follow this trial. Night stay at Thorpu.

Day 25: Trek to Birtamode, 5 to 6 hours (300m/984ft)

We will drive from Thorpu to Birtamod and transfer to hotel for overnight.

Day 26: Drive from Birtamode to Bhadrapur and fly to Kathmandu

After 40 min drive from Birtamode to Bhadrapur, we will reach Bhadrapur airport. After 45 minute flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu, you will be checked into the hotel. You can enjoy your rest of the evening looking around the tourist spots and markets. You can also buy some gifts and souvenirs. After that, the fabulous commemoration dinner will be hosted and then you will be dropped to the hotel for overnight.

Day 27: Farewell Day

This will be your last day in Kathmandu and our company staff will pick you up from hotel to airport depending on your flight schedule. If you wish to add some more days to your trip or want to explore more about Nepal we are ready to help you in every matter 24/7.
